I wove through the hedge maze, without a care for how lost I wound up. I let my anger and fury lead me through. If I reached a dead end, I simply spun around and took another route.

The aimless walking allowed me time to simmer down and remember how to breathe. Despite how amazing the food had been, the appalling dinner left a sticky taste in my mouth, and I wanted to spit it out until I rid myself of the nobles’ conspiracy. I wanted to shout their insolence from the top of the Zoo, to open all the doors and let the animals run free. Then I’d run to Alona and tell her that she was right before finding Diana to ask her if she knew what kind of government she was protecting.

But I did none of those things. Instead, I found a larger section of the maze and plopped down next to a statue. I leaned my head against the cool marble and let it ease my nerves. I kicked off the leather slippers and spread out my toes. I rubbed my feet along the ground and let the earth soothe me.

I put my head in my hands. I had to wait them out, wait until all of those bastards and bimbos returned to their lush rooms and soft beds and slept with no more guilt on the hearts than the night before. I hunched over, determined to sit here as long as it took. I even contemplated spending the night out here. It had been a while since I’d slept under the stars.

“Martin!”

I lifted my head and tried to place the voice. Then I realized that it was ringing inside my head, not from anywhere nearby.

“Ffamran?” I called back. We had never done this without looking at one another before. It was one of Rebekah’s goals for us that we had yet to achieve. But here we were, dragon and man communicating via our minds. Desperate times called for desperate measures, I supposed.

“Where are you?”

“Uh…” I looked around and took stock of where I had ended up. “I ran into the hedge maze.”

“Yes, Martin, I saw that much.”

“I don’t know exactly where I am,” I admitted with a shrug. “My plan had been to either just crash here or maybe blast my way out.”

“That is part of the complication of running wildly into a maze,” Ffamran commented. “Is there anything nearby that looks distinguishable?”

“There is a statue of some royal person,” I said lazily. “He’s wearing a robe and has a long beard. He looks sort of like Gandalf…”

“I do not know who that is,” Ffamran replied, “but I do know where that statue is. I will be there soon.”

I heard him before I saw him. The hedges bowed as he careened down the path. The leaves creaked in tandem with each movement, then his shaggy face appeared around the corner, soon followed by the rest of his body.

“Are you alright?” Ffamran asked. He pressed his face against my torso, and I wrapped my arms around him briefly.
